Feb. 9 -- This Week's Journal Entry

"You have to have a vision. It's got to be a vision you articulate clearly and
forcefully. You can't blow an uncertain trumpet." Rev. Theodore Hesburgh

Students, This week, you will be writing one journal entry, but it will count as two. Notice the quotes that are scattered throughout this post. All of them have to do with leadership. Does the career you are studying require you to be a leader or a follower? In which of those two roles--leader or follower--are you most comfortable?

Good leadership requires you to surround yourself with people of diverse
perspectives who can disagree with you without fear of retaliation. ~Doris
Kearns Goodwin

Have you ever been in a situation that required you to be a leader? Think of sports, clubs, or church activities of which you have been a part. Did you take on a leadership role? How did it go?
Inventories can be managed, but people must be led. ~H. Ross Perot

What about the leaders in your life? Think of parents, coaches, teachers, scout leaders, or others who have led you in any capacity. What about an older sibling? There are leaders all around you. Have they been good ones or bad ones? How did they motivate you to follow them?

It's hard to lead a cavalry charge if you think you look funny on a horse.
~Adlai Stevenson

Big news: You are leading someone, whether you realize it or not. Someone is watching you and following your lead. What kind of leader are you right now? What kind of leader do you want to be? Use the questions I have asked as your prompts. Pick one of the quotes and include it as you put together your thoughts. This entry is basically asking you about your own personal philosophy regarding leadership.

This journal entry must be 150 words or more. Remember, your journals are due for a mid-way checkpoint next week. They are worth 100 points. Each entry will be 10 points, and this week's will count as 20 points.

Honor System will be in place. I am trusting that you people have respected the required word count on each journal entry. Please count to the 75th word in EACH ENTRY, circle it, and write "75" above it. On this week's journal entry, count to the 150th word, circle it, and write "150" above it.

Questions? Comments? Let me know.

Wow this looks really interesting. I like this idea. The whole journal entry thing. NOT the turning-in part. Just the rest of it.
I also really liked the quote by Adlai Stevenson! It was funny, and yet it was very true.

Um, i guess that is all i have to say about writing for today. Although i must say even though i really do enjoy class-time and all, I've really enjoyed not having to do any work this last week. And plus it was restful not having to go Tutorials as an all day event like usual. Its nice to relax a bit. I'm actually starting to get used to it some. But no more. It isn't healthy to get used to NOT doing schoolwork. Nope. Well, unless another "snow" day occurs next week, i should hope to see you all next Tuesday!

Bye! :D

Snow days are pretty enjoyable and the Adlai Stevenson quote was my favorite, I’m going to try to incorporate that one. Well I guess I need to get back in the swing of doing all of school, but until then, have a great week.

Oh not sure if it matters, but you capitalized "this" in the second paragraph, unless you meant to, it’s against the capitalization rules. Just checking.

Mrs. Powell
I was reading the assignment again today and noticed that you said count to the 150th work instead of word, and I’m still having a hard time finding interviewees. See you Tuesday.

Daniel,

Sarah was the first to catch that goof, so she gets the 5 points. I left it up unintentionally! Oops! :)

You really need to find your interviewees. You may use your dad as an interviewee. See if he can help you with a couple of others. How about talking with a couple of professors? If you are having trouble finding people, you may need to expand the focus of your paper to be more widely inclusive in your field.

Hi. Are we still required to blog? Oh well, I will anyways. Mrs. Powell, is the journal entry our only homework? Hope to see you guys on Tuesday.

Wow I’m really tired of the snow, but I am thankful for the snow day today, because something is wrong with my car, it acts like the alternator, but I took it to advanced auto and they said it was fine.
