What is a Comma Splice?

A comma splice joins two complete sentences with a comma only.

Example:
The writing class at Aaron is helping me improve my skills, learning to write well is essential for success in today's world.

The comma used above is trying to join two complete sentences. The writing class at Aaron is helping me improve my skills is one complete sentence. Learning to write well is essential for success in today's world is another complete sentence. Using a simple comma is not only wrong, it absolutely breaks your teacher's heart! The comma is simply too weak to do the job of joining these two sentences together!

Let's fix it!

Use a semi-colon.
The writing class at Aaron is helping me improve my skills; learning to write well is essential for success in today's world.

Use a period to establish each sentence on its own.
The writing class at Aaron is helping me improve my skills. Learning to write well is essential for success in today's world.

Add a coordinating conjunction with the comma. (Remember FANBOYS: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so)
The writing class at Aaron is helping me improve my skills, for learning to write well is essential for success in today's world.
