Finding People to Interview

Students,

I hope you all enjoyed the snow! :) I also hope to see many of you at the basketball games tonight. If you have never gone to see the Aaron Academy teams play, it is a lot of fun. Several of the writing students are on the basketball team: Johnny Bobbitt, Josiah Hazelbaker, and Logan Vaughan. Come on out to the game tonight and support your Royals!

How are you doing when it comes to finding people to interview? Last year, I found that many of my students were uncomfortable asking people for interviews. Of course, I think this is a great opportunity for you people to get out of your comfort zones! I'll be the first to admit that it is not easy to call strangers, much less seek them out, and then get up your nerve to ask for an interview.

Here's something to keep in mind: Everyone loves to talk about him/herself. It is human nature. Asking someone to give you a few minutes of her time to talk about what she does and why she does it, or to expound on a subject that she knows and loves, is going to get a YES 99% of the time! (Now Larizzle, I know what you are thinking. You fell into that remaining 1% with me, but I really wanted to say yes to your request for an interview. However, it is my class policy to decline. Every other author you ask will say yes!)

Here's where you look:

  • Yellow pages
  • College faculty members
  • Asking around your church and extended family members
  • Go on Amazon to find books written about that subject. Google the author's name to find a personal website or facebook. Contact that person.
  • Once you have that first interview, ask your interviewee for names of people he/she knows who would make a good interview.
Maybe you have exhausted all these possibilities, and you still cannot find enough people to interview. Let's say that you're trying to find sources on animal physical therapy.

Go to Google. Type in "animal physical therapy"--just like that. Be sure to put quotation marks around it.

I clicked on the link that began "open domain...." Once there, I scanned the page for a name. Hmmm. Licensed Physical Therapist Tanya Doman describes her rehabilitative services for dogs and horses. That looks pretty interesting. Once I clicked on that, I found Tanya's homepage! And down at the bottom it says: Contact!

A Contact button is a wonderful thing. It means I can email that person and ask if she has time for an interview. To get an idea of what to say in your email, check out this LINK.

Hope to see you at the game!

Mrs. Powell,
I have a few questions about our internet resources. Are we supposed to fill something out like we did our book sources? (Also, I dont think in out class you ever took them back up after we discussed them becuase I still have mine) Also, Is it okay if I label my three Internet sources "A","B",and "C"?

Grace,

Thank you so much! I read your comment and then sent everyone a handout for listing your Internet resources. Check with your parents to be sure it was received.

In class, I am only checking these lists to be sure you have completed them. I'm not taking them up yet. They will be turned in with your final research paper, so hang on to them!

Once you get the list, fill it out, and label your sources however you would like.

You're about to be on Fox! Is there some reason you didn't notify us?....

Kay lo,

I do not know why I didn't mention it. It was on my website, though.

How did I do?

I want to make it very clear that I was wearing Danya's jacket...everyone loved her jacket!

Oh my goodness! How crazy! One of the first things I said to Mom was, "I love her jacket!" Your daughter has very good taste..

You did absolutely wonderful as usual. :) Glad I got to see it!

Oh, and I was so distracted by the whole tv thing, I forgot to ask my questions! On my articles that I have printed, I can't find where it tells what the "date of the article" is. Also, I can't find who the author is on a couple of them. And, what's the difference with the "title of article" and "name of internet site"? Where do I find those?

Mrs P, on the internet resources, I assume we are printing off the page we will use, but what I want to know is: do you want to see just the fill-out page or the online article too?

PS COME TO THE BASKETBALL GAMES TONIGHT!!!!!

Kay lo,

You may not be able to find all the information that is requested. Just find as much as you can.

LoVizzle,

You are showing me the printed off articles and the list on Tuesday.

And PLEASE, everybody, COME TO THE BALL GAMES TONIGHT!

Kay lo,

I see I didn't answer your questions.

Let's say you got something off the Fox 17 site. The name of the site is WZTV Fox 17/Nashville. The url is http://www.wztv.com

The name of the article should be somewhere at the top of the page. It won't always be. That's one reason you are printing everything off.

We'll take a look at everything this Tuesday...I hope!

MRs. Powell,
On the interviewee forms, what if you do not know their education?

Mrs. P ~ thanks for all the information about the interview process. However, may I make a suggestion ~ artistically speaking? Don't use blue words on a red background ~ it hurts the eyes!
Thanks alot,
Nathan
P.S. Go Cardinals!

Oh my word Mrs. P! It is supposed to snow again... on TUESDAY!!! Why can't it snow on monday? Or thursday? Logan thinks we're cursed and I'm starting to think he's right. Oh well maybe I'll see you next week!

VG,

You can ask the person and fill it in after you know. It's important to find out your interviewee's educational background. It will help give you direction about the career.

Nathan,

I changed it to black. Better?

All,

How about if we pray that it doesn't snow until Tuesday night? Then we can enjoy it on Wednesday!

Mrs. Powell,
Ok, I know it's Monday night, but I just wanted to make sure I did this right. On the "conducting an interview" paper does location mean location of the interview? Just making sure. I hope school is not closed tomorrow!

Casey,

Location refers to where the person you are interviewing lives.
