THE GREAT DATE DEBATE '08 IS IN THE BOOKS!

Students,

Well, you did it! And it wasn't so hard, was it? I really hope that reading the books, taking the test, writing the reviews, and then debating the issue has been something that has helped you take a closer look at dating. Grace asked how I think the debate went. I think everyone did a great job, and I could tell that many of you had really given both sides a lot of thought. You were articulate, thoughtful, and respectful of your classmates, which is more than I can say for some of the adults we have been watching throughout this campaign season!

Now what? Your second argumentative paper is what you need to be working on this week. Pick a point to argue from the debate topics:

DATING is/is not essential for finding the right person.
DATING does/does not distract a Christian from focusing on God.
The physical component of DATING is/is not harmful to one's future marriage relationship.
The temporary aspect of DATING does/does not encourage healthy self-esteem.
DATING prepares one for marriage or DATING prepares one for divorce.

This paper will be set up like the other one:
Five paragraphs -- introduction, three points, conclusion
Word count -- Let's attempt exactly 500 words! See what you can do here! (Keep in mind that I think this is FUN!)
THESIS STATEMENT -- Remember that the thesis statement is the last sentence of your introductory paragraph. It must briefly list all three of your points.

References -- We're adding three references to this paper. You will need to choose quotes from the Harris book, the Clark book, and/or the Bible. DO NOT choose all three of your quotes from the same source!!!! Mix it up! These quotes will affect your word count, so choose wisely. Think like the media: Sound bytes!

Outline -- An outline must accompany your paper! You need at least two subpoints that support each of your three main points!

Questions? Let me know. Tuesday you will need to have your outline and draft and be prepared to do critiques.

um...does the posting look different now or is it just on my computer? ok on the paper, can we have two quotes from the same place? Or do all of them have to be from a different source? Holly :D

Holly,

Yes, the blog looks different! Hope you like it!

On your paper, you may have two quotes from the same source, but NOT all three from the same source. Remember, one of your quotes must be from the Bible.

Grace,

On Tuesday, you will need to have your outline and your rough draft.

Mrs. P, I have a great quote that fits perfectly in one of my paragraphs. The problem is, it isn't from either books or the Bible. It's from joshuaharris.com. Can I use that as one of my quotes?

Logan,

That's a good question, and believe me, I understand when you think you have found the perfect quote. I'll let you use it as long as you are quoting Joshua Harris. (You said it was at his site; I just want to be sure you are using him.)

Hey Mrs. Powell. I'm still in the mountains. I've got my writing stuff with me, but I'm not having a lot of time to work on it. Hopefully I'll get a decent drart and outline completed by Tuesday.

We won!I also was awarded the all-tournament award!

I have a question on the paper. yes, I know its monday. I didnt have time because of the tournament.

Are we suposed to have a title page? Or just BAM! hand in the paper?

Rebecca Ingram Powell said...

Grace,

You never need a title page when your draft is due. The draft should be typed and double-spaced so that it is easy for someone to read and critique.

CONGRATULATIONS ON THE TOURNAMENT! We're all very proud of you!

GO LADY ROYALS!

Well, this is definatly (definately?) a rough draft. It has 666 words. Thats way over word count, and a little scary. 666!!! ahh!!! Sorry to whomever critiques my paper! ha ha!
