Your research papers are to be formatted in the following manner:
- Double spaced
- Use Times New Roman font, size 12 point
- The first line of each paragraph must be indented .5".
- If you indent any long quotes (as I showed you on the Sample Research Paper (SRP) ), these must be indented 1".
- Hit the "enter" key an extra time before beginning a new section.
Keep in mind how to introduce the people or resources you are quoting. Use only last names after you have introduced someone.
Remember how to introduce abbreviations, as noted on the SRP. :)
Each of the seven sections of your paper must be numbered with Roman numerals, centered, and placed in bold font.
Be sure to insert page numbers. Here's how:
- Click on the word INSERT in the toolbar at the top of your document.
- Then click on PAGE NUMBERS.
- Position? You want TOP OF THE PAGE.
- Alignment? RIGHT.
- UNCHECK the box that says, "Show number on first page."
- Then click on OKAY.
Be sure your page doesn't cut off at any awkward points, as we discussed in class.
Remember your endnotes. You must have at least six within your paper. More than that is fine, too. Just don't overdo your quotes. They should not take up more than 20-30% of your paper.
Do not write this paper in first-person. Don't use "I" or "you" unless you are quoting someone. Use third-person.
And don't forget your cover sheet.

Okay, so you talked about indenting long quotes..how long is long? More than on sentence? What if there's one REALLY long sentence?
Kay lo,
If you type it out and it is more than four lines, then please indent it. So if it is only one sentence, but still four lines, then indent.
Mrs. P
All right bloggers, I have a challenge for you. I'm struggling to come up with a name for my paper. I want it to be funny or creative. My career is restaurant management. Please post any ideas you got. Thanx
LoVizzle, do you want it to be about restaurant management or the restaurant manager?
THERE ARE NO DO-OVERS FOR THE RESEARCH PAPER!!!!! AHHHH!!! What am I going to do! I'm soooooo feeling the pressure right now!
It can be about either, kay lo. I just need some ideas right now.
Mrs P, I'm having trouble with the beginnings of my sections. The beginnings of the first sentence all sound boring in my mind or sound to much alike. For example, I can only come up with: In order to..., if someone wants to..., it takes... What should I do?
LoVizzle, the only thing I can think of right now is to refer to the restaurant managers as America's favorite managers. Just as Mrs. P told you to try to talk about America's fetish with eating out in your introduction paragraph, you could mention something along those lines in your title. You could put "RESTAURANT MANAGERS: AMERICA'S FAVORITE MANAGERS" or "RESTAURANT MANAGERS: THE MANAGERS AMERICA WOULD DIE WITHOUT" or just something like that if you wanted it to be kinda funny. Maybe that could help ya. If I think of anything else, I'll let ya know.
Okay, so Mrs. P, how important is it that we tie up each paragraph neatly? I'm having a big problem with tying ALL OF MY POINTS together. Would it be a major no-no if I didn't have a "tie-up" snetence to some of the paragraphs? Advice?
Kaylo,
I say get the paper written out and then go back and focus on your segues. Not every paragraph will lend itself to being tied up neatly. You'll need to focus on the ones where it is a possibility. So, write first, then go for those kinds of details later.
LoVizzle,
Same advice to you. Get it hammered out, and the beginnings are details. Then, see if there are any places where you can begin with a question that leads into what you are about to talk about, such as:
What does it take to run a great restaurant?
Another good opener is to use a direct quote from someone you interviewed.
Mrs. P
Mrs. Powell, i cant find the sheet that tells me the word count. also, we are not allowed to use can't and shouldn't and words like that..right? as in the rules for an original paper still apply to the reasearch paper...?
Randi Rae,
Word count is between 1500-1800. I don't mind if you use contractions.
Mrs. P
We can use contractions? Hallelujah!
Why would you want to use contractions tho? We're trying to get over 1500+ words here, guys!
Hello LoVizzle! I just finished getting all of mine typed out, and I have 2,517 words. I have quite a bit of editing to do. But, I don't think it will be too bad.
Hey Mrs. P, I have 595 words in my introduction section. I can probably edit plenty of stuff from other paragraphs in order to keep it all (which I REALLY like my intro section), but is that too long? Cuz, I mean, that's like a third of my whole paper! But it's also my fav part of my whole paper. So, what should I do. Can I keep it that long?
Kay lo,
uhm...yeah...that's way too long of an intro. :)
Cut it down as much as you can and then we'll look at it on Tuesday. It's hard for me to tell you what to do without reading it.
Mrs. P
Okay,...then what should my maximum word count for the section be? I have two paragraphs within the section. The first on is 223 words. The second one is 369. The first paragraph is what I read to you over the phone. The second paragraph talks about what exactly FCS is and the danger of neglecting its practices. I need help! What do I do!?!?!?!
Would it be okay to transfer some of it to the conclusion so at least it will be more evenly distributed? Then, I can still just edit more from the middle sections. Oh wait, the conclustion is 407 words! Ahh! Those are like my 2 longest sections. But, they're also my favorite! What do I do!?!?!?!?!?! Mega-crisis here! And I'm about to have to leave for 4-H at 2:30. THEN, when I get home you'll be GOOOOOOOOOOOOONE!!!
8O...HEEEEEEEEEEEELP!!!!!!!!!!
Kay lo,
okay, let's see. You have over 2500 words that you need to get down to 1800. You have likely been staring at it for a long time. The best thing you can do is go to 4-H and then tackle it again when you get home or even tomorrow.
I was going to suggest that you incorporate some of it into your conclusion, so we are thinking along the same lines. You are really in good shape because at this point having too many words certainly beats not having enough.
Don't forget there is a post on the ol' blog about how to reduce your word count, so check that out.
And don't forget to pray! The Lord knows how to do this. The Lord always knows!
Mrs. P
hola to all! I've had an awesome week. But...unfortunately..i um...havent really gotten to my peper yet...:O. BUT!, when this bad boy is complete..muahaha!..i think it will be pretty good. For me at least. Not Kayleigh or Logan good.
Question....
Is there anything we can do for extra credit this semester?
Holly,
Extra credit: The only thing so far this semester was the concert. I am really not big on extra credit, although I know you students are. Being prepared for class, attendance, blogging, and following instructions are a few things I am big on. If you do what I ask you to do, you will have plenty of points. :)
Mrs. P
how long does the paper have to be?
No Fro Jo
No Fro Jo,
Your paper must be between 1500-1800 words.
Nice to see you on the blog. What was that you were saying last week about prioritizing? :)
Mrs. P
C'mon Holly, Kayleigh and I aren't that good. We're great! Lol jk!! No really, I've actually never seen kay lo's work, so I don't know about her. I DO know that my stuff is good, but I'm never satisfied with my work. Just work hard Holly and you'll do great! UGGG! I'm SO behind today!! I STILL have my conclusion to write and the endnote section to take care of! AHHHH!!! But I will NOT use my card! NEVER!!! Oh, Holly and Mrs P, the card is extra credit, isn't it???
oh i notice that i said "peper"..i meant paper ...
thanks Mrs. P!!
LoViz and Holly,
YES!! How could I forget the golden ticket that is worth a whopping 25 extra points when you turn it in with your research paper?
Mrs. P
I think the reason you forgot it is because all most everyone has used it by now.
i refuse to use my card!!!!! must...stay...strong..!!!!
We have no clue who you are! Reveal your identity, or we will open fire! Ok, maybe that was to strong...
